The gateway to the North American market
Mexico is Latin America’s second-largest economy and the only country in the region with free trade into both the United States and Canada. The USMCA, which replaced NAFTA in 2020, makes Mexico the natural place to manufacture for the North American market — no tariffs, and delivery times in days rather than weeks.
That is what lies behind the wave of production moving from Asia closer to the customer, seen in recent years above all in the north of the country and around Monterrey. For a European company it means a route into the US market without having to set up a company in the United States itself.
What Mexico offers
- A consumer market of 130 million people.
- Tariff-free access to the US and Canada through the USMCA.
- Developed industry — automotive, aerospace and electronics.
- OECD membership and a dense network of double taxation treaties.
What to watch
Mexico is a federation and a good deal is settled at state level — tax, employment law and permits can differ depending on where the company is based. Security is strongly regional too; the north and the tourist areas are a different world from some inland states. Choosing the location matters more here than it would in Europe.
