A country mid-turn
Argentina is the continent’s second-largest country, European in its origins and its culture, and for decades also a textbook case of an economy able to hurt itself. Since 2024 it has been going through the deepest liberalisation in generations: deregulation, repairing the public finances and dismantling the currency controls that complicated every foreign investment for years.
Inflation, which not long ago ran into hundreds of per cent a year, has slowed sharply. For an investor that means a country where asset prices are historically low and where the environment moves fast — in both directions.
What Argentina offers
- Property and farmland at a fraction of European prices.
- Rich mineral resources, including lithium and the Vaca Muerta field.
- A well-educated workforce and a strong services and IT sector.
- European culture, food and a temperate climate.
What to watch
Argentina has several sovereign defaults behind it and a record of changing the rules mid-game. The reform is promising but unfinished, and the political cycle could undo some of it. Money should go in with the understanding that this is a bet on the reforms continuing, not a conservative place to park capital.
