Two oceans and the second-largest market

Colombia is South America’s second most populous country and the only one with access to both the Pacific and the Caribbean. It is an OECD member with a developed banking sector, and Medellín has gone from being a byword for violence to one of the region’s hubs for technology and startups.

For a European the appeal lies in a large domestic market, reasonable prices and a climate that in the highlands stays around twenty degrees all year. Bogotá and Medellín are both favourites with people working remotely.

What to watch

Security has improved enormously, but the differences between regions remain wide and the more remote areas have their problems. The tax system has been reworked several times in recent years and is fairly heavy; it pays to plan with a local adviser from the outset.
