The continent’s most stable economy

Chile has long been the best-rated economy in South America — an OECD member with strong institutions, an independent central bank and the lowest level of corruption in the region. It stretches four thousand kilometres from the Atacama desert to the glaciers of Patagonia, and is the world’s largest copper producer.

For a European company it is the easiest way into South America. The legal framework is predictable, banking works to international standards, and Chile has a modernised free trade agreement with the European Union.

What to watch

Stability has a price — Chile is the most expensive country in the region, whether for property, wages or services. The economy is sensitive to the copper price, and recent years have brought a public debate about the constitution; two attempts to replace it, in 2022 and 2023, both failed and the existing one remains in force.
